Recap of the Bear Fair: A Day of Education and Conservation

This event aimed to educate the public about bears and promote bear conservation efforts. Despite challenging weather conditions, the Bear Fair drew nearly 300 participants and offered a host of informative activities and resources.

Partnerships and Support: One of the key factors contributing to the event's success was the collaboration of various partners. The Farm Bureau's generous food donations helped attract a substantial crowd, and attendees even ran out of food by noon, a testament to the event's popularity. Informative Stations: The Bear Fair featured multiple stations, each designed to educate the public about living in Bear Country and bear conservation. Due to adverse weather conditions, the event was held under cover to ensure attendees' comfort. Some of the stations included:

Apple Cider Press

The Apple Cider Press a specially designed apparatus, was introduced in an effort to encourage the public to actively participate in gleaning fruit from their own trees.

Pressing the Cider.

One of the highlights was the new apple cider press. It wasn't just about delicious cider; it was a call to action. It urged everyone to glean their trees, protecting bears from unwanted visits to our homes. The tribe's Shelby, at the helm of the press, oversaw the production of 112 gallons of cider. This station proved that together, we can make a significant impact on bear conservation.

Livestock Carcass Removal Program: An essential aspect of bear conflict mitigation, this station provided information about the program, with updates on the progress of a new trailer.

The Program is an initiative designed to address the proper disposal of livestock carcasses in areas where they may attract wildlife, particularly bears. This program is part of a broader effort to mitigate conflicts between bears and humans, especially in regions where bear populations are present. more info below.

Wildlife Conflict Resolution: Wildlife Services experts discussed how to handle wildlife conflicts and the services they offer.

Vendor Participation: The Bear Fair also saw participation from vendors, including Gallagher Electric Fencing and Bear Vault. Gallagher Electric Fencing specializes in electric fencing to keep bears away from homes, while Bear Vault offers a range of bear-resistant food containers and safety measures. Both vendors received positive feedback from the public and expressed their intention to return for future events.

Bear Spray Training

Motorized Bear Encounter: One of the thrilling attractions at the Bear Fair was the motorized bear encounter. An impressive radio-controlled grizzly bear took center stage, capturing the attention of attendees of all ages. This lifelike bear simulation was designed to mimic a real encounter with a bear in the wild, offering a safe and controlled environment for learning and practice. Participants had the unique opportunity to test their bear spray skills in a realistic scenario.

Bear Spray Training: The bear spray training was a hands-on experience that provided attendees with the knowledge and confidence to handle potential bear encounters safely. This crucial training was not only informative but also vital for those living or venturing into bear country. Participants learned about the proper use of bear spray, including when and how to deploy it effectively.

Plans for the Future: With the first Bear Fair in the books, we're already looking ahead. The success of this event was a beacon, illuminating the path for future endeavors.
